Ljubljana Door Detail, Slovenia captures a close-up of the bronze relief on the side entrance of Saint Nicholas Cathedral. Sculpted by Mirsad Begić to commemorate the visit of Pope John Paul II in 1996, this monumental masterpiece—known officially as the Ljubljana Door—depicts the 20th-century history of the local diocese. In my composition, I isolated a row of Ljubljana bishops, intricately cast with solemn expressions and traditional mitres, looking down in deep contemplation.
Shot in black and white with a shallow depth of field on a cloudy morning, the composition emphasizes the raw texture of the bronze door. By keeping only a single bishop’s face in sharp, crisp focus while the surrounding figures gently blur into the background, I created a rather scary composition.
