Vintgar Gorge Rapids captivate visitors with their raw energy and mesmerizing turquoise color. My photo showcases a powerful waterfall cascading through a narrow limestone canyon, where the rushing waters of the Radovna River have carved a dramatic path over millennia. Above the churning rapids, the iconic wooden walkways hug the steep cliffside. Thanks to them, visitors can easily navigate through the gorge along the path that eventually leads to the famous Šum Waterfall.
However, the serene atmosphere you see in this photo contrasts sharply with the reality of my recent visit in 2025. Visiting this natural monument back in 2014 felt like stepping into a peaceful paradise. Today, due to overtourism, the experience can feel like pure madness. The once-quiet gorge now operates under strict one-way traffic rules to manage the massive daily crowds, transforming a peaceful nature walk into a heavily commercialized conveyor belt. Despite the overcrowding, you can still capture the empty walkways—you just have to pick a less popular time for tourists and hope for the best. Nevertheless, the raw geological beauty of the 1.6-kilometer-long canyon—located just 4 kilometers from Bled—remains undeniable, even if you now have to share it with thousands of others.
