Piran Walls Sunset Panorama, Slovenia captures the transition between day and night in one of the most photogenic coastal towns on the Adriatic Sea. I took this photo during an early September evening from the historic Piran Walls (Piranske obzidje), a medieval fortification dating back to the 15th century. It is one of the best vantage points overlooking the entire city. However, because the site has strict opening and closing hours, it can be a bit limiting. Which was exactly the case in early September. At 8 PM, the official closing time, it wasn’t dark enough yet for a proper blue hour photo. Nevertheless, I’m very happy with the colors I captured: the purple and gold tones, and the clouds signaling an impending storm that later moved further right toward the Julian Alps.
On the left side of this ultra-wide panorama, two small lighthouses marking the entrance to the Piran marina can be seen. Parts of Tartini Square are visible in the middle of the photo. Dominating the right side of the skyline is the illuminated bell tower of St. George’s Parish Church, modeled after the famous Campanile in Venice—a nod to Piran’s deep historical ties with the Venetian Republic.
Artist’s Note: A small excavator was retouched from the bottom part of the photo.
