Vyšehrad Basilica vaults feature some of the most spectacular Art Nouveau ceiling murals in Prague, transforming the historic stone structure into a vibrant sea of color and pattern. This perspective captures a mesmerizing view of the monumental ceiling, a masterpiece of Czech decorative art.
While the basilica dates back to the 11th century, these breathtaking ornaments are a relatively modern addition. Painted between 1902 and 1903 by the acclaimed academic painter František Urban and his wife, Marie Urbanová-Zahradnická, the murals represent a pinnacle of the Czech Art Nouveau movement. Inspired by the work of Alfons Mucha, the couple meticulously covered every arch and pillar with rich botanical motifs, elegant ribbons, and stylized figures of saints and angels.
Seeing the fully decorated interior of the basilica is a transcendental experience. The left side of this composition features deep, royal blue vaults studded with gold stars, mimicking a tranquil night sky, which gracefully yields to the warm gold, terracotta, and soft green tones of the opposite arches.
