Ljubljana Cathedral Ceiling, Slovenia reveals a breathtaking display of high-Baroque artistry, captured in symmetry from directly below. Painted in the early 18th century by the Italian master Giulio Quaglio, this monumental illusionistic fresco transforms the vaulted interior of Saint Nicholas Cathedral (Stolnica sv. Nikolaja) into a dramatic, open sky filled with saints, angels, and soaring architectural elements. The masterpiece stands as one of the finest examples of trompe-l’œil painting in Central Europe, designed to visually expand the sacred space.
During my visit to the cathedral, I was allowed to capture the ceiling from the very center of the nave, which was off-limits to visitors.
