Holy Trinity Square in Banská Štiavnica during blue hour with illuminated Baroque plague column

The Holy Trinity Square in Banská Štiavnica is the historic heart of Slovakia’s most charming UNESCO town. Captured during the magical blue hour, this photograph highlights the dramatic contrast between the warm street lamps and the deep twilight sky, bringing out the timeless atmosphere of the square. Banská Štiavnica is a former silver-mining town nestled in the Štiavnica Mountains, famous for its rich history and importance throughout the history of Hungarian and Austro-Hungarian Empires.

The Holy Trinity Column is standing proudly in the middle of Holy Trinity Square. This monumental 18th-century Baroque plague column was built to celebrate the end of a devastating epidemic. Its gilded halo shines brightly against the evening backdrop. Visible on the hill in the upper left background is the New Castle (Nový Zámok). This 16th-century Renaissance fortress once served as a watchtower against Ottoman invasions. To the right, you can see the distinct roofline of this 15th-century Gothic Church of Saint Catherine.

Artist’s Note: A car parked in the distance, was removed from the photo.
