Dragon Bridge at dawn stands as one of the symbols of the Slovenian capital. My photo focuses on one of the four iconic sheet-copper dragons that guard the corners of the famous Zmajski most. Opened in 1901 to honor Emperor Franz Joseph I, the bridge is a masterpiece of the Vienna Secession style. It was one of the earliest reinforced concrete bridges in Europe. The dragon, adorned with its characteristic green patina and intricate textures, serves as a timeless protector of Ljubljana’s rich folklore.
Shot during the cloudy early morning, the composition utilizes a shallow depth of field to elevate the dragon from its urban surroundings. In the distance, the distinct twin towers and green dome of the St. Nicholas Cathedral (Ljubljanska stolnica) rise against the cool morning sky. I used a shallow depth of field to create a layered composition, which is further enhanced by the compression of a telephoto lens.
Artist’s Note: A traffic sign in the bottom right corner was retouched.
