David at Palazzo Vecchio, Florence, Italy offers an intimate look at one of the world’s most celebrated symbols of Renaissance art. I used a telephoto lens to capture a non-traditional view, focusing on David’s expression and exquisite anatomical detail set against the striking blue and gold decorative elements above the main entrance of the town hall.
While the original marble masterpiece carved by Michelangelo Buonarroti between 1501 and 1504 is safely housed inside the Accademia Gallery, this faithful replica has stood next to Palazzo Vecchio on Piazza della Signoria since 1910. In the background of this fine art composition, the vibrant blue backdrop featuring the golden fleur-de-lis (the symbol of Florence) and the sun-shaped monogram of Christ adds a rich layer of color to this early morning photo.
