Trogir Old Town Courtyard reveals a quieter and more intimate side of this historic Croatian town. I passed through this small courtyard several times during my stay in Trogir. I saw it at night, in bright sunshine and again on a cloudy afternoon. In the end, the soft overcast light worked best. The laundry hanging above the courtyard added colour and, more importantly, a sense that this is still a living neighbourhood rather than an open-air museum.
Stone walls, worn steps, colourful doors and a red scooter fill the compact space. An arched passage leads into another narrow lane, while balconies and windows rise irregularly around the courtyard. Details such as washing lines, flower pots and everyday objects are part of the character of Trogir’s residential streets. Even the local tourist board recommends getting lost among them to discover the small details of everyday life that rarely appear in guidebooks.
The Trogir Old Town Courtyard therefore represents something different from the town’s famous cathedral, palaces and fortress. Its appeal comes from the combination of centuries-old limestone architecture and ordinary daily life. On this particular afternoon, the hanging clothes and subdued light made that contrast especially visible.
