The red roofs of Mikulov, a small historic town in the heart of Moravia, Czech Republic come to life in this mid-morning photo. For most photographers, a cloudless late morning is a nightmare—the light is uncompromising and the sky is boring. However, this shot of Mikulov, taken from the stone stairs that lead to Svatý kopeček, proves that even “bad” light can be useful. I used the deep, solid blue of the void-like sky as a backdrop that makes the red rooftops and the distant Mikulov Castle pop. From this point of view, you are still so close to the chimneys it feels as if you’re perched on the tiles themselves. Truly a postcard view and a nice, different addition to all the early morning or sunset photos we all have.
