Storm Chaser – Rainbow Catcher

The lone tree stands in the middle of the field, covered by the briefly appeared double rainbow in the fleeting storm light. A lot of times, it is the photographer that chases the storm and the beautiful contrasty light. In june 2022, it was quite the opposite. After some minutes of not particularly great light I was no longer the one chasing the strom light. The storm was chasing me. The rain started along with some wind. I decided to walk back to the car, expecting the worst (the walk took about 7-8 minutes). I got to the car moments before the crazy rain and wind hit. I waited out the storm in the car and as the storm was ending a beautiful rainbow appeared. I hurried back to the spot and the following scene appeared for about 5 minutes.

Artist’s note: some high voltage powerlines in the distance (not significant, but visible) as well as the shadow of my tripod were retouched from this scene.

Cherry Tree and Afternoon Clouds, Slovakia

A lone Cherry tree (used by hunters as a lookout, hence the ladder) in the middle of a field during the late May afternoon. These simple rural compositons and sky filled with coulds are my favorite.

Artist’s Note: tractor tracks, that I used to get to the middle of the field, were retouched.

Mud Cracks

A detailed top down view of a cracked mud during the autumn sunset light. I have always been envious of so called “mud cracks” photos taken at famous locations like Death Valley, USA. At the beginning of September 2019 a huge rainstorm hit the area very close to my home and created quite a large mud area. After it dried out over the course of two weeks, it became cracked just like in Death Valley. Although sudden downpours are becoming quite common, the muddy area that cracks over time is still a rare occurrence. The area itself isn’t very photogenic, so abstract views are the way to capture the beautiful randomness. I could spend hours photographing these. However, the best light for this subject appears to be soft evening light.

A lone tree lit by the warm rays of setting Sun after an afternoon spring rain on a slope just outside my home village. I really love the contrast between the dark clouds and warm lightrays. It is definitely "my kind of light".

A large amount of snow falls into a deciduous forest close to my home. A long lasting snow cover has become a rarity in our part of country, so I seized the opportunity and went to make the photo as soon as possible. It was actually still snowing!

A misty but warm November afternoon at one of the hiking trails in Malé Karpaty (Little Carpathians), Western Slovakia. At around 600 meters of elevation, the mist rolled in with ocassional Sun shining through the top of the trees.

Cadini di Misurina Twilight, Dolomites, Italy

Cadidi di Misurina, the impressive jagged peaks south of Tre Cime di Lavaredo during an early september twilight hour. I was hoping for some dramatic Sunset clouds and light, but got these delicate blue and pink tones instead. A different kind of light, but impressive nevertheless.

Mondeval Mysteries, Dolomites, Italy

A spectacular display of evening fog at Mondeval Valley in Dolomites, Italy. It is one of the most unique scenes I have seen to date. It is very difficult to capture the scale and grandeur the towering rocky walls and deep green valley below. The valley lies on the entrance to Mondeval de Sora plateau, that was inhabited by Mesolithic hunter named “Mondeval man” about 7500 years ago. The body was found in 1987.

Another World, Dolomites, Italy

The mist slowly comes into a small valley between Passo Giau and Mondeval area in Dolomites, Italy. Compared to other Dolomite scenery, this valley almost felt like I was transported to another continent and into another time period. I could almost see the Fellowship of the Ring walking down the hill.
