Vintgar Gorge Walkways, Slovenia

Vintgar Gorge walkways, known locally as Žumer Galleries, are the defining feature of this breathtaking canyon just outside of Bled. My photo showcases the intricate system of wooden bridges and pathways that hug the sheer limestone cliffs, allowing visitors to walk directly above the rushing turquoise water. These pathways provide an immersive experience through the 1.6-kilometer-long gorge, making the dramatic geological formations accessible to everyone.

The history of these walkways dates back to 1893 when the gorge was first opened to the public. Building them in such an inaccessible and wild terrain was a massive engineering triumph at the end of the 19th century. Today, they are continuously maintained, and as you can see in the photo, modern safety features like rockfall netting have been added.

Nowadays, it’s quite a challenge to capture the walkways so empty, but it is possible. You just have to pick a cloudy day near the end of the opening time and hope for the best, though it can still be tricky.
