Piran coastline at dawn offers a moment of tranquility, before the sun rises above the horizon and the city wakes up. This panorama captures the iconic Piran peninsula, filled with Venetian-style houses. At the very tip of the peninsula lies the Church of Mary of Health, which was originally dedicated to St. Clement—the patron of sailors. With its distinctive round lighthouse tower, this small church has guarded the town’s sailors since the 13th century.
Captured on a calm, cloudy morning in early September, the view of the Piran peninsula can get even more dramatic. On exceptionally clear winter days—usually following a freezing Bora wind—the atmosphere gets so clear that the Julian Alps, including Mount Triglav, can be seen in the distance behind the town. Maybe one day I’ll be able to visit Piran in winter and capture this magnificent view too.
