Bled Lake at Night, Slovenia

Capturing Lake Bled at night during the moody blue hour is a dream for many landscape photographers, but sometimes, the location has other plans for you. In this panoramic photograph, the dramatic, heavy clouds roll over the surrounding mountains, while the warm lights of the island church and Bled Castle reflect beautifully onto the glassy, long-exposure surface. However, look closely at the center, and you will see several glowing blue light trails and other smudges that almost ruined it for me.

To be completely honest, when I was standing on the shore with two other photographers, this group of night kayakers initially felt like they completely ruined our shot. Just as we set up our gear to capture the perfect, undisturbed reflections of the church, the tour guide told his group to “Enjoy the unique view, enjoy the moment”—while they paddled directly into our composition, stopping right where the light reflections were supposed to be clean.

Although I was frustrated at that exact second, photography is all about adapting to the unexpected. Sometimes, the best travel photography experiences are the ones where things don’t go according to plan. This evening at Lake Bled taught me that even when someone accidentally disrupts your perfect reflection, the resulting image can still turn out better than expected.
