The Banská Štiavnica Calvary Upper Church (Horný kostol) stands proudly at the summit of Scharffenberg hill. I captured this photo in October 2018—the exact month marking the triumphant completion of its extensive 11-year restoration. Illuminated during the magical blue hour, the panoramic view shows the newly restored red-and-white Baroque facade and its distinct twin towers glowing against the cloudy, twilight sky and vibrant autumn foliage.
In 2007, the entire Calvary complex was listed among the World Monuments Fund’s 100 most endangered sites. Thanks to dedicated conservation efforts led by the Calvary Fund, the project culminated in the official reopening of the fully restored Upper Church to the public. Perched at the highest point of the volcanic hill named Scharffenberg, the Upper Church acts as the visual and spiritual climax of this 18th-century Jesuit pilgrimage complex, which comprises 17 chapels and three churches.
